Text MY COUSIN, KAJ LUDVIGSEN

Written by Poul Ludvigsen

It was with pleasure that I accepted the task of writing a short biography of Kaj, because without his impressive work in compiling our family history, much of the information would probably have been forgotten. Without doubt, his comprehensive book about the Ludvigsen family forms the basis of much of the information included on this website, and, of course, particularly the fact that we now know more about our common great-grandfather’s origin, specifically because of his persistence in searching out the truth. ‎(More of this can be found in the biography of Carl Ludvig)‎.

Kaj Verner Ludvigsen was born 13 October 1914 in Gedeskov, Gedesby on Falster, as the son of Carsten and Blenda ‎(Persson)‎ Ludvigsen. About his childhood, he has told me that he ‎(which was very common in the countryside during that time)‎ very early on learned to work outside the home, among other times when he, at the age of about 11 or 13, sat on a threshing machine and tied bundles of straw for the princely sum of one krone per day. That he didn’t attend school for a couple of weeks, no one took very seriously.

As a young man Kaj worked in a variety of jobs in agriculture, until he in 1935 completed his military service in the infantry in Vordingborg, and was later called up again in 1936 and 1939, serving one month each time. Those periods were not something that Kaj has looked back on with enthusiasm, which was just the opposite for the winter of 1935 when he spent six months at Ollerup Gymnastic School for young people, a time which he enjoyed a great deal and later recalled with pleasure. As a matter of fact, he has always been interested in sports and has participated in many different kinds.

In 1936 he moved to Copenhagen where several of his siblings already resided and he lived with some of them in Thorsgade on Østerbro for a number of years. He worked the following years at different jobs, apparently mostly in factories, although he accepted employment wherever he could. On 24 February 1945 he married Jytte Dora Ahlmann Sørensen and Bente was born to them. Jytte and Kaj shared many interests, among them ballroom dancing and they participated in several dance competitions. Another hobby was camping, with tents and various campers, both in Denmark and different places in Europe. Kaj has always been what has been referred to as a bookworm, that has is obvious both in his letters to me and during the only time we, as adults, have spent time together, in January of this year, when I visited Denmark.

Jytte passed away 18 September 1992 and Bente 13 March 1999.
